As some of you may know, we have been working on By Mine Own Hand for a while now. Unfortunately, we haven't been making a lot of progress. We have the start of a design document, and I have the majority of a battle system prototype, but the fact of the matter is we are too small and this project, as designed now, is too large.
My initial vision for BMOH was something simpler and quicker to develop. We have a really interesting and new battle system though, and we all wanted to give a shot at creating a game using that. It's looking like we just don't have the resources to do that right now. I'm having a lot of trouble finding an artist, so it is looking like I'm going to have to outsource the development of the art for the games. With the limited budget we have, the scope of the games we create are going to have to be bare bones.
Taking the above into account, I've decided to go back to more of my original plan. Over the next year, we will be developing three smaller games. Each of the three games will have some element that will end up in the larger game we were trying to build BMOH into. By spending the next year developing these three smaller games, it gives me a chance to work on elements of the larger game, keeps the scope small enough that I can afford to outsource the art development, and finally it will get us some products out there that can generate some revenue so that the budget of each game can increase a bit and help get us the funds to get the bigger game going.
Here is a brief synopsis of each game:
Game #1 - Temp name Monster Mayhem This game will introduce the archer/sniper character type. The game play is kind of a cross between Tempest and Robotron. It's action based with minimal story and interaction. A more traditional arcade type game.
Game #2 - By Mine Own Hand I'll be taking By Mine Own Hand back to its original design. A Gauntlet type game, but with a stronger story element. The game play will be Very Gauntlet like, with many creatures on the screen, and spawner objects from which they come. This game will focus on the Warrior/Heavy Weapons character type. It will also introduce the conversation system we have developed.
Game #3 - No Name Yet The final game will focus on the Rouge\Demolitions Expert character type. This game will be a puzzle type game, that has some tower defense type elements to it.
I think my making these above changes, we will be able to have more focus and a better chance of completing development on them. Stay tuned for updates on what is happening with each game.
